The OSSWALD Families
 |
Our OSSWALD family goes back only to about 1789. In Germany, the families lived
in Baden-Württemberg in the following: Neckargröningen, Ludwigsburg,
Pforzheim. Baden-Württemberg is in the southwest of Germany,
and the capital is Stuttgart. Andreas OßWALD was a Royal Württemberg stableman at the Royal stables.

His son, Philip Jacob, Sr., was a Shoemaker. He immigrated to
the United States in 1884 and became a US Citizen.

His son, Philip Jacob, Jr., was a Harness
Maker and Upholster in Philadelphia, PA. Philip married Elise
Ernestine
Luise WEISS and they had 9 children. Only 2 of their children
lived to maturity. One was a Machinist and the other went to
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), held 3 US Patents,
and became a Manufacturing Engineer.
|
The different spellings of the surname is attributed to misunderstandings at the point of immigration. In Germany it was spelled OßWALD. (ß = SS). In the
United States, their surviving children dropped the double S.
